Literacy Mentors observe and coach teaching strategies to each of the Early Reading First teachers. This involves using assessment data to plan goals for each child, whether it is improving a child's skill in oral language, phonological awareness, print awareness or alphabetic knowledge. Mentors also help in classroom arrangement in order to make the classroom a more functional area. They help in the process of ordering materials necessary for creating a literacy rich environment. Materials such as rubbing plates with pictures, words or vocabulary are purchased and are necessary for the children to begin experimenting with the writing process.
Literacy Mentors also observe the teachers on a weekly basis and have personal conferences with each teacher. This is not a fault finding discussion, but more of an observation on the part of the mentor and a reflection on the part of the teacher. Our teachers have had many successes, some great and some small, but any success that improves a child's literacy skills is a great accomplishment. |
