Mentoring
Each Project HOPE classrooms is assigned a Literacy Mentor. These mentors encourage the teachers to implement new ideas that stimulate literacy development in children. They assist the teachers in introducing new materials into the classroom and mentor them in ways that will enhance the use of the items that have been acquired. In addition to this, the mentors monitor each child's development through a variety of tests, which include PPVT- 4, EVT-4, Get It, Got It, Go, Pals, ELLCO and ELOTS. The data collected from these test assists the teacher and parents in the development of teaching strategies that will engage the child in the appropriate literacy activity that is geared toward their individual ability.Mentors provide guidance and support to each Project HOPE teacher. They assist the teacher during professional development training and help to ease the transition into new methods of teaching. Mentors play an important role in the Project HOPE grant.
PEER
The PEER program for parents was developed to assist Project HOPE teachers in encouraging parent involvement. This program better equips them in the development of literacy skills in their children.
Any parent who has a child in the Project HOPE classroom can volunteer for the PEER program. Each parent that volunteers in the PEER program will serve for a two month session and may volunteer again at any time during the school year. Every effort is made to insure that every parent has the opportunity to be involved. During these sessions, PEERS's are asked to participate in the monthly professional development training where they will acquire the tools needed to share reading methods and techniques of early literacy development with other parents. Each PEER member will be asked to make contact with at least three parents who have not attended monthly parent meetings to both encourage them to attend future meetings and to educate them on information that was covered in the meetings the parent(s) missed. The PEER will be asked to complete a simple parent contact form and to wear the Project HOPE name tag when representing the program. The PEER will also agree to participate in all the other parent involvement activities.
Incentives are given to parents who participate in the PEER program. Parents who serve as PEER's will receive a gift card in the amount of $10 for attendance at professional development training, a gift card in the amount of $10 for each parent contact, up to three in total, recognition by peers and program staff at professional development trainings and free books to add to their home libraries.
